He was also a four-sport star, earning all-state honors in baseball, indoor track, basketball and volleyball. During his a subsequent career in minor league baseball, he won the Baseball American Minor League Player of the Year Award. His major league debut came in 2003. Baldelli played for the Tampa Bay Rays 2003-09 then moved to the Boston Red Sox for one season (2009). He returned to the Tampa Bay Rays in 2010, but a mysterious metabolic/muscular disorder led to numerous injuries and forced Baldelli to retire as a player at the early age of 29. He currently works in the Tampa Bay Rays’ office.
